Earthquake!!!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…  No, not really.  It was, however, a strange day made even stranger by a relatively rare occurrence in New Jersey.

In the early afternoon, I had to make the 10-mile trip from one of my offices to another.  En route, I was jolted while stopped at a traffic light.  No, it had nothing to do with the title of this article.  Rather, my vehicle was struck in the rear by a car operated by a driver preoccupied by something above her visor while approaching the traffic light.

The very nice older woman who slammed into my vehicle suggested I call the police, which I did.  Twenty minutes later, I was back on the road toward my destination.

Twenty minutes after that, I was on my return trip parked at a fast food drive-up speaker placing an order for lunch when my vehicle began pitching and swaying as if on some type of ride at an amusement park.  Not conceiving that the earth itself was moving (in an atypical way), I was asking myself what could possibly have happened to my vehicle as a result of the accident to make it behave in that manner.

Totally absorbed in my own thoughts, I didn’t realize for several minutes that people were streaming from a multi-story medical office building across the street from the fast food restaurant.  Not very quick on the uptake, I now realized that the swaying had nothing to do with my earlier accident.

Instead, it turned out that I had felt a tremor from a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck in the vicinity of Washington, DC and sent shock waves up and down the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.

Awaiting a potential impending landfall from Hurricane Irene and still reeling from the downgrade of U.S. Treasury securities and the resultant turmoil in the financial markets, DC –more than anywhere in the U.S. – probably needed to be shaken up.  Perhaps, our lawmakers will look at the earthquake as a sign that significant changes need to be made to get America’s financial house in order.  Or, coming so closely on the heels of today’s 5+ magnitude quake in southern Colorado, the DC earthquake may be just a warm up for the big one on October 21.
