Auto Buyers: Beware the Craigslist Used Car Scam!

Posted on 27 May 2010

Searching for a used car?  Don’t fall prey to a scam that is rampant on Craigslist, the popular network of online communities featuring free online classified advertisements.

The opportunity to advertise products and services for free has made Craigslist a highly desirable marketplace for everything from real estate to electronics, toys, collectibles, and jobs.  Because the ads are free of charge and editorial scrutiny in the vast majority of the Craigslist communities, it is the perfect venue to perpetrate scams and other nefarious activities.

You might recall the flap over promotion and solicitation of prostitution via advertising on Craigslist.  While prostitution is often considered a victimless crime, other activities on the website can cost you dearly.  Identity thieves, those seeking to sell you various work-at-home and multi-level marketing schemes, and yet others looking to defraud you outright lurk in every corner of Craigslist.

This latter group includes the particular form of scamming of which I have recently become cognizant.  Using the Web to search for a used car on various sites, I perused Craigslist and discovered a number of amazing deals on vehicles that had relatively low mileage and were purported to be in “mint” or “perfect” condition.  Included among these were a 2006 Nissan Maxima for $2,900, a 2003 Acura RSX for $3,300, a 2005 Toyota Corolla for $2,740, and a 2008 Honda Accord for $3,400.  The advertisements for each of these cars had numerous pictures of various interior and exterior views and detailed descriptive information.  They all required you to send an email to the presumed owner for more information.

I sent emails requesting information on these vehicles and received the following responses:

For the Nissan –

This 2006 NISSAN MAXIMA SE SEDAN is in perfect working condition. Title Clear. My husband was recently promoted so we had to move in Omaha, Nebraska. We brought the car with us, but my husband received a new car from the company. Besides, there are a lot of things which have priority now, so, this car has to go. As you probably noticed, the price is rather low $2900 because i want to find quickly a buyer. Due to the fact I am very busy with my work and I don’t stay too much at home, the car is already to the shipping company and will be delivered from there very fast. If you are interested, please email me with your details (name and address) for the shipping process.
Mileage:  65,600 miles

And

I will make the deal only to eBay. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 7 days testing period after delivery. During that 7 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested in buying it so I can ask eBay to send you the details on how this works. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay (name, address and #) so we can get things started. The price is $2900 with all the taxes and charges of the shipping process included.
Here is some pics with my car:

For the Acura –

Hi there, Thank you so much for contacting me regarding my 2003 Acura RSX. The car has 67,611 miles is in perfect condition without any mechanical problems, tires and wheels are in great shape as well, electric is working perfectly, has a clean and clear US title without any accidents. No liens or loans on the it. Never had any paint or body work done. The engine and equipment are all in proper working order. The price is $3300.I am selling the car because of the financial crises that affected me in the same measure it affected the most inhabitants of this country. I’m in a hurry to find a buyer because I’m in debts with my bank and a few days ago I was made to work. But what it’s really worrying me is that if I don’t get money quickly I’ll lose my house because the term due at my bank is near and I don’t have the money to pay my rate. So now you can see the reason why I’m selling my car at $3300$.We will use only eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection to complete the sale. If you are interested to buy email me your full name and shipping address so I can open the case with eBay.
Thanks,
Kasie Ragsdale

For the Toyota –

First of all I want to thank you for your interest for my car. I sell it at this price($2,740.00 ) because I have been divorced recently and I don’t have a driver license.

flaws or any kind of damage, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions and comes with a clear title.

From the beginning you have to know that for the payment I request only secure pay, I prefer the payment to be done using eBay services.

We will use a safe payment method because I am affiliated at eBay and I have a purchase protection account for $20,000.00

The final price that I want for this car is $2,740.00 including shipping and handling.

If you are interested in buying it please provide me your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through eBay.

I will wait your answer very soon.

And

Hi again,

The car is already at the shipping company in Orlando, Florida sealed and ready for the shipping.

I have a contract with eBay so this deal must go through them. I’m very busy with my job and I’m getting off the town so I can’t meet

in person with you so this is the reason why I chose to sell my car over the internet. According with  the eBay you have 5 days

from the time you receive the car to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.

Here is how it will work:

1.First of all I will need  the following details from you:

- Full Name

- Full Shipping Address

- Phone #

2. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to eBay.

3. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices. The invoice will send you the details on how to make a refundable payment.

4. eBay will contact me and I will ship the car to you. After you receive the car you will have 5 days to test, verify and do whatever you need with the car.

If you will buy, then I will receive the payment details from eBay so that I can pick up the money.

5. If you will decide that you will not buy the car,  eBay will refund the money and I will have the shipping company come pick up my car.

If you wish to make the transaction, please send me the necessary info so  we can proceed. I look forward to hear from you.

Thank you

Hello,
Thanks for your reply.
As i told you i am stuck here in the military company and i have restrictions in communicating due to the medical and physical exams that i have to complete.
The vehicle will arrive with a military cargo so that is why i can offer free shipping.
I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 3 days testing period after delivery. During those 3 days of testing period I will not be
getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for
eBay, full name and  shipping address so we can proceed.
Hope we will do business together.

Best Regards,

Note that although these ads were placed in the “Central New Jersey” Craigslist community, each vehicle is in a distant location and in the possession of some type of shipping or holding company.  In each instance, there is a compelling reason given for the surprisingly low asking price (military reasons seem to predominate).  All of the responses are sent from an email address bearing a female name (presumably, they know less about autos and would sell one for less than half its true value).  All of these sellers indicate that they will bear shipping costs for delivery and, if necessary, return of their vehicles (scammers do have their generous side).  And, the signature similarity of all of these responses is that they purport to use some type of eBay buyer protection service.  While eBay does offer certain protections, there are numerous conditions and exclusions, and it offers no such services as described in these correspondences.

If you do provide the information that these scammers are seeking, I surmise that you would be contacted by someone falsely representing himself as a representative of eBay to facilitate transfer of the purchase amount and assure you that no funds will be distributed to the seller until you have received and had the opportunity to fully inspect and test the vehicle.  How long you would await delivery of your automobile before realizing you had been scammed and contacting law enforcement (who would be unable to assist you) would vary depending upon your individual level of gullibility (from incredibly gullible to unconscious).

Needless to say, the old adage that “if something appears too good to be true, it probably is” has once again proven accurate.  If you are a used car shopper, save yourself the aggravation and deal only with reliable sources of online information.

My husband said this was too good to be true! He was right! I got the exact same email however it was not from MONIQUE–it was from Marie Hudson. The car was a 2005 Toyota Camry–$3300, shipping included! I exchanged some emails, but thank goodness nothing more! I was ticked off and I did report it!!

  2. Ohio Hick says:

I was searching today for a good, low mileage used car. Got the G35 Special too! What a sick person to use a husband dying in the military to scam people!! This person will get it. Karma does happen.

Stay clear of “Monique Ferguson.” Hell, the name even sounds fake. Too good to be true, it probably is….but I had to do some research first, it wouldve been a great deal….Stay alert, and keep websites like this going. All the best.

    Ohio Hick.

  3. Howard says:

They usually will want to pay you with a “money order”. If the amount is substantial, do it with escrow, or meet at their bank.

  4. TractorForSale says:

So I just found this scam on a tractor. Glad I did some checking. Couple of things…
1 – A quick online search shows the price to be about 10% of the going price online. If someone were really in dire straits I still think that they would want at least 50%.
2 – I asked a simple question in my first email. Does it run? The reply I got did not address that question as specifically as I would have expected from a real person on the other side.

    Hello,

Thank you for your interest in buying my husband’s tractor. I’m selling it for $2,700. I wanted to keep the tractor but me and my husband left the city for a better job in L.A., so we decided to sell it. The tractor is in showroom condition, no mechanical problems and it has 547 hours. It has a clear title and it will come with a trailer included. We will use eBay Vehicle Purchase protection to secure this transaction.

Here is a link with the pictures:

If you are interested please email me back.

3- I looked up the Ebay Protection Plan since I didn’t know anything about it and I was unsure of why someone would list something on Craigslist and then say that they will use Ebay to sell it…seemed fishy.

4- I asked another simple question – Where is the tractor located? – and I got this reply that again didn’t seem like the way that someone would answer that question.

    Hi,
Thanks for replying.Because of our jobs we don`t have time to stay and meet with all our potential buyers,so we’ve decided to sell it online. That’s why we gave it to a shipping co. that will ship it to the next owner(on my cost). You will have 5 days from the time you receive the tractor to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not. If by any reason, you aren’t satisfied, you will return the tractor to the shipping co. with no expense. We will be using eBay’s Protection for our safety.
Please reply with your complete name and shipping address in your next email and let me know if you are interested in knowing more details about this purchase so that I can open a transaction at eBay and to move forward with this deal. After that they will contact you with all necessary information about this transaction(terms, buyer protection, payment instructions,invoice,etc.).

P.S.I forgot to tell that the tractor will be shipped from Omaha NE.

So I decided to look online for scams and this was the first website I looked at. Some people suck. I really wish this was a good deal but am glad I took the time to look into it and I hope others do the same. I think I will keep emailing “Donna Flint” and see what else she has to sell :)

I’m corresponding with “Monique Ferguson” who did exactly what the author of this said. Why doesn’t someone find and arrest these people??? What is ebay doing about it? It’s not really surprising they were able to destroy the world trade center.

    I use CRAIGSPAL

Been finding and FLAGGING many scammers.

It’s us versus them (scamers), If everyone flags his own “niche” of search that daily browse , craigslist will be CLEAN!!! of spammers and scammers. Craigslist removes post flagged from multiple IP addresses, if we have everyone search narrow to his own niche and flag spam posts, we get clean result.

I recommend this application to all my friends, and we keep our craigslist niche clean!

    second response…

    Hello,

The car is located in Chicago at the shipping company (I just moved here with my new job), we will use eBay Purchase Protection Program so we be both protected and insured. The price for the car is $2,900 with shipping included. The car it’s in perfect condition, there’s not even a scratch or any dents on it. Everything from the motor to the tires and mirrors is shining and looking brand new. I have a clear title for it, no liens or loans and never smoked in. The transaction fits the Vehicle Protection plan and will be covered by eBay. eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection reimburses buyers who are involved in a vehicle transaction through their program. The program provides reimbursement for all the situations that can appear in a transaction. The money will be sent to an eBay agent. After the payment is confirmed and secured by eBay I will start the shipping. The car will be in front at your door in max 3 days. From the moment you receive the car you have a 5 days inspection period. After the 5 days you have to decide if you want to keep the car or not. If you’ll keep it, the payment will be released to me. In case you will not like the car and decide not to keep it, you will have to ship it back and you will be fully refunded.
If you agree with these terms and you have the money, send me your full name, address and telephone number where you want the car to be delivered and I will initiate the transaction with eBay. You will receive all the transaction details from them.

    Thank you!

Doesn’t make sense? there ya go – you’ve identified a scammer. some people enjoy messing with these guys too – i’ve tried it. it’s fun. just be careful and don’t give out ANY factual personal info.

  31. ANDREW says:

I seem to be uncovering a similar ruse perpetrated by kath33vargas@aol.com. The listing is for a 2004 Nissan maxima for $2200 (includes shipping). This is the response I received to my ad inquiery:
    Andrew,
I apologize for the late reply but I had some issues with my laptop and I couldn’t get online to check my email. I have the car available for sale if you are still looking to buy it… This Nissan Maxima SL (2004,Red) is priced at $2200 with the delivery and handling costs included.
I’d like to tell you that I’m not selling this car for profit or due to lack of money. The reason for selling it is that some recent events in my life made me change my perception of certain things, things that I’ve considered important in the past. The funds received after this sale will be directed towards charity. Right now I’m traveling with UNICEF as a volunteer. You need to know that the car is in excellent condition, no engine problems, regular maintenance done, never involved in accidents, garage kept and comes with a clean title (VIN: 1N4BA41E54C882865, mileage: 85,000 miles). I’m not trying to offend you, but if you intend to apply for a loan or financing, please do not respond because the car is priced for a fast sale and I require a cash transaction.
Also, I need to be sure that we do this transaction in the safest mode possible for both of us. I recommend we do the transaction using eBay because they offer the highest rate of safety and reliability during online transactions.
If you’re still interested and ready to agree with my terms (I’ll only sell the vehicle using eBay) please reply so I can give you a detailed description on how the transaction will be done. Also, I can send you the car’s detailed description and more pictures if requested…

I look forward for your reply.

    Thank you,
    Katherine”

I have not yet received any other responses to my replies to this last message. However, upon doing some curious online fishing, I’ve discovered the same ad for the same car for the same seller posted in 11 different Craigslist regions of no geographic relation (all entirely disparate cities and states). Thank you
This 2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 SEDAN is in perfect working condition. Title Clear. My husband was recently promoted so we had to move in Omaha, Nebraska. We brought the car with us, but my husband received a new car from the company. Besides, there are a lot of things which have priority now, so, this car has to go. As you probably noticed, the price is rather low $3,400 for you if you will buy it today or tomorrow. Due to the fact I am very busy with my work and I don’t stay too much at home, the car is already to the shipping company and will be delivered from there very fast. If you are interested, please email me with your details (name and address) for the shipping.

    Mileage: 58,896 miles
    Thank you

It was 10 at night when I found out I had been scammed but called Western Union fraud immidiately and they refunded me service fees and all. Sometimes you get caught up in something that is definitely too good to be true.

    STAY AWAY FROM EVELYN GRIMES!

Been emailing back and forth with BobyOneil@gmail.com about a 2004 Dodge Ram. Didn’t send any money but i did send my name and address before something inside told me to check this dude out.
Did I find this in time or is he capable of doing harm with just a name and address??????

  40. hadafeeling says:

First and second email from this boby.oneil@gmail.com, i had asked to see the truck after the first email, his response is in the second on why i couldnt.

    Hey,
Thank you for your interest in my truck. I am selling it because I will soon go on a second tour in Afghanistan and I don’t want it getting old in my garage. I will be gone for the next 18 months. The price is low because I need to sell it before we deploy, at the end of August. The vehicle is in great condition and runs great. It only has 74,950 highway miles on it. It has never been wrecked and never smoked in. I had serviced it only at the local dealer. Maintenance records are available. Clear title in hand.
If you decide to buy it I will be paying for the shipping charges. The total price is $2,890.00 with no other hidden taxes. Please email me back if you are interested in buying it.

I am in a currently stationed at Malmstrom Base,Montana. We are getting ready for Afghanistan. We are in the final stage of our training and we are not allowed to use the phone during this period. This is supposed to keep us focused on our trainings. I am only allowed to check my email few times a day. I hope you can understand that we will have to stick to email for now. The vehicle is here with me at the base but I’ve already made all the arrangements with DAS to pick it up from the base. DAS will also handle the title transfer for an extra $75.00. Being in the army has some advantages and one of them is the fact that I can ship it very cheap. I will pay for the shipping charges, as I’ve said in my first email. I think I can have it there in 3-5 business days.
I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will give a 5 days testing period after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested in buying it so I can ask eBay to send you the details on how this works. I have to fill out a form on eBay and I need the name that will go on the title and an address where you want the car delivered. Once I do it, eBay will email you all the details on this transaction and we can get the ball rolling.

Thanks for inquiring about my 2006 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SE. The Nissan has been well taken care of. It is in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever, never been involved in any accidents. The interior looks great (smoke-free). It has 63,500 miles, automatic transmission , 6 Cyl 3.5 L engine size. It has a clear title with no loans or liens on it. I’m selling the car because my 23 years old son died 2 months ago in a car accident. A drunk driver hit him and his fiancee. He was with his fiancee’s car coming to our home at his little brother birthday. It was his car and it brings me too many bad memories and that’s the reason I want to sell it as soon as possible. The price that I’m asking is $2,470. Just let me know if you are still interested and where are you located. Thank you, Linda

PS: Here is a photo album of the Maxima: http://s1191.photobucket.com/albums/z468/maxima06/(If the above link does not work copy and paste it into a new web browser window.)

Hi again Marsha, The Maxima will be shipped to your place from Glendive, MT. It is sealed and ready for shipping. It will come along with it’s documents, signed title on the front and back(notarized signatures) and the notarized bill of sale so you can easily transfer the registration in your name. All you have to do it to visit your local DMV office(with the papers provided) and transfer the registration in your name, it’s very easy. We will use eBay Motors, so we can both be protected and insured because I don’t have time for a meeting right now. According with eBay you have 7 days from the time you receive the vehicle to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not. Like I told you the total price is $2470 including shipping and handling. You have 7 days to test the Maxima and after the inspection period in case you don’t want to buy it then you will be refunded and I will pay for returns. PS: I will need your name and shipping address so I can get the ball rolling with eBay. They will contact us with all necessary information about this transaction(terms, buyer protection, payment instructions, invoice,etc.).
This reeks of SCAM! The seller went by linda donald.
